Sustainable earth: This two-story structure showcases the beauty of rammed earth construction, with horizontal layers of soil creating a textured, thermally efficient facade.

Spring Dales Public School

SDPS was founded in 1992 by Lamdon Society, an NGO formed by the local community in Leh. The project was conceptualised in collaboration with Chybik + Kristof Associated Architects and is made possible by Brontosauri in Himalayas. The mission of the school is to provide quality education to all children, with no differences in social or economic background. The project has been active for over 10 years, during which a classroom block, a hostel block and most recently the laboratory block have been constructed along with other infrastructure, while the Kindergarten Block is currently under-construction.

Sustainable Wisdom: Passive Solar Design Meets Traditional Craft

The design process for this educational facility was driven by a commitment to sustainability and vernacular wisdom in a harsh high-altitude climate. We utilized rammed earth technology, sourcing soil directly from the site to construct thick, thermally massive walls that naturally regulate the indoor temperature. To combat the extreme cold, the building's orientation was meticulously calculated to maximize passive solar gain, featuring a rhythmic facade of large timber-framed windows that trap heat during the day. This raw, earthen shell is complemented by warm wooden interiors and modern infrastructure, creating a nurturing environment that bridges traditional construction with contemporary learning needs.
